The city was named for James Irvine who, along with partners, bought the land from the owner of Rancho San Joaquin in 1864. After acquiring the land interests from his partners in 1878, James Irvine had 110,000 acres of land from the Santa Ana River to the Pacific Ocean which his son, James Irvine II, inherited and incorporated into the Irvine Company.
